Last week found me in Miami Beach for a couple of days. Fortunately my wife came along for the trip.
While shopping in South Beach one afternoon, the Irish Redhead found herself presented with a tall, willowy Russian model selling men's fragrances in a department store. Not looking for cologne for me, but not wanting to be rude, the IR listened to explanations of various elixirs for men, perfect for Valentine's Day.
Trying to disengage, my wife finally said "you know, my husband likes really old formulations of cologne made by this company that goes back to George Washington's time...he really wouldn't like any of these new scents."
A thoughtful pause while the young salesgirl tried to think of how to save the opportunity. Then...
"OH my GOD! I know what you mean! He likes colognes like Polo or Aramis?"
My wife said it was all she could do not to howl with glee. Poor George. Poor Caswell-Massey. Only dating back to the 1970s.

Funny. Whatever it is, a man should be loyal to a fragrance. I'm not sure why a seller thinks that such a sales tactic (the "drive by spraying") would be successful on fellas. It's not like men wake up in the morning thinking "I need a new scent" like women do. The best selling men's cologne, I believe, is Old Spice. As lowbrow as that might be, it says something about our buying habits when it comes to this sort of thing.
I happen to love the smell of Old Spice...but it doesn't work on any man under 50 these days.
I do enjoy CM's line and especially like the old barbershop fragrance of Jockey Club, my favorite for warm weather-soap, talc and cologne.
And an email announced that CM is having a President's Day sale, loaded up on soaps. So why is it when CM has a President's Day sale it does not feel cheesy, but when every car dealer in my area announces "Presidential SAVINGS!", I cringe?
Ben and SP, I think we should wear what we like. Pinaud has some great inexpensive colognes. Also I love Brut. Still. OS not so much. Although the bottle is great and I do meet the SP age threshold!!!
Alfred, thanks for the comment! I love Jockey Club too. You are so right about Presidents Day sales.

I can't tell you all the memories those two fragrances back!
